The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that is located at the front of the neck. Thyroid glands are part of the endocrine system. This gland secretes many hormones that regulate the metabolic activity of the human body. Thyroid glands also play a significant role in the proper functioning of the heart and the digestive system. It aids in muscle control, brain development, mood, and bone upkeep.

The proper functioning of the thyroid gland depends upon the amount of iodine a person consumes in their diet.

The thyroid gland is located below Adam’s apple. The gland synthesizes iodine to produce vital hormones such as Thyroxine(T4). This T4 is the primary hormone produced in the organ and released into the bloodstream. While the T4mixes in the blood, it releases a small amount of Triiodothyronine(T3), which is the most active hormone that controls the body’s metabolism.

The thyroid gland produces about 80% T4 and about 20% T3. However, the T3 is four times the hormone “strength” as T4.
