Arthritis is a painful disorder affecting the body’s musculoskeletal system. In Ayurveda, Rheumatoid Arthritis is compared to a condition called as Amavata.
Amavata
The word Amavata has 2 components
i.e. Ama and Vata. These 2 components contribute to the morbidity and disease process in Amavata.
Vata component in the cause of painful conditions in Amavata — The body functions are governed by 3 basic entities called Vata (the wind element), Pitta (the fire element) and Kapha (the water element). When these three are functioning by coordinating and cooperating with each other we are at the best of our health. Even among these three, Vata is the important component which governs Pitta and Kapha.
The effects of wind are evident in nature. The effect of vitiated wind principle in the body is a concept unique to Ayurveda.
Aggravation of Vata and formation of Ama are due to
1. Consumption of incompatible foods
2. Sedentary lifestyle,
3. Sluggish digestion.
Amavata has its origin in weak metabolism. Gut-related symptoms are the earliest manifestations of the disease which appear much before the joint or soft tissue related symptoms. Attending to the disease at this stage when it is still sprouting will prevent the manifestation of a dangerous condition like rheumatoid arthritis.
If we take care of our gut health, it is possible to curb arthritis in its earliest stage itself. Ayurveda texts list the symptoms of early manifestation of arthritis and you can identify these symptoms with the help of your doctor. Ayurveda has safe and effective treatments for arthritis and it is possible for each one of us to make the best use of them.
